One example from the text of looking at the new world with new eyes is the idea of a global economy. We hear all the time in the news about globalization and how the world is being connected through new technologies. Guillermo mentions that this global economy is seen as this great thing that is happening. He says that people believe that “the world is at our fingertips.” However, this is not entirely true. There are many people in Third world countries for which this is not true at all. He says that they have no choice in the matter and that global economy for us really means “transnational economy” for them including sex and drug trafficking, kidnappings, and smuggled goods (10). This new world of global economy is not at all what it appears to be especially for those in Third World countries.

Another example from the text is the idea of multiculturalism especially in the media. He says that the corporations have created a “global mall” where you can experience anything you want whether “sexual, spiritual, artistic, political, or gender” (12). These corporations believe that they are being multicultural by portraying these different types of people. However, they are really creating stereotypes that lead to and play into “racism, sexism, and oppression” (12). It is not truly multicultural, and as we learned in class, many of the stereotypes we see in television are completely wrong. This new world of multiculturalism is not really truly multicultural.

An example of changing mirrors into windows from the NYC trip is the Sacrilegio exhibit. The frames actually looked like hand held mirrors, but what we saw was a window into the modern world. It’s a window into a world that idolizes models and actresses. It showed a world that is very materialistic and focused on self. It is all about what can I get for myself? What will make me happy? What will make me beautiful? The view out the window is not very pretty, but we can change it. That change has to start by looking in the mirror at ourselves, and changing our negative views and opinions of others.
